Obesity and periodontitis

Obesity and periodontitis

Obesity could be considered the epidemic of the 21st century, and it is a disease that suffers from 16% of the Spanish population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 1 billion people in the world suffer from excess weight, and 300 million of them are obese.
Periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are pathologies that affect the tissues surrounding the teeth, bone and gums.
It has been shown that suffering from periodontitis carries a risk of the appearance and / or progression of certain systemic diseases such as cardiovascular, diabetes, certain respiratory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity and metabolic syndrome, as well as pregnancy alterations such as the birth of premature infants or newborns. under weight.
In a recent study, it has been observed that obesity is directly related to periodontal disease. It is speculated that periodontitis as a chronic infectious-inflammatory disease will contribute to the state of systemic inflammation and even that its treatment will lead to a reduction in comorbidities associated with it.
It is very important that people are aware of what this disease entails, that we lead a healthy life with a balanced diet.

The dental health professional will record a thorough medical history and review any medical problems that could point to the cause of obesity. The state of oral health will also be evaluated and treatment will be provided based on the previous diagnosis. Special emphasis will be placed on reducing plaque and accompanying inflammation, both above and below the gum line. It is also necessary to reinforce care at home and encourage patients to floss regularly and brush their teeth twice a day with a toothpaste that offers antibacterial protection.

At Clínica Blasi we want to help our patients become aware of the importance of leading a healthy life and having a good oral hygiene routine.
