ADVANTAGES OF ABSOLUTE ISOLATION AGAINST COVID-19
Absolute isolation is a technique used in dentistry that offers different advantages. The main objective is to avoid contamination of the operative field. This is done with a latex rubber dam (there are also polyvinyl for latex allergy sufferers) that have different sizes and thicknesses. The rubber dam is perforated, with a perforator creating holes of different sizes through which the teeth pass, it is fixed with a clamp (or staple) in teeth that are not going to be treated and later an arch is placed which holds it in tension. The dam acts as a physical barrier during esthetic, operative, and endodontic treatments.
Using the high speed or other rotatory material generates aerosols that are mixed with the patient’s saliva. According to the General Council of Dentists of Spain, with absolute isolation, we can reduce the viral load by up to 70%.
Other benefits of using absolute insulation include:
Reduce gag reflex
Avoid swallowing material and / or instruments.
Reduction of the presence of fluids in the operating field, thus maintaining the properties of the materials to be used. The adhesion of certain materials, such as adhesive cement and composites, decreases in the presence of fluids.
Time-saving in treatment.
Pollution reduction. With isolation, we reduce microbial contamination, achieving a clean and dry environment.
At Blasi Clínica Dental Barcelona we make sure to perform good isolation of the operative field to guarantee the quality of our treatments as well as the safety of all our patients (adults and pediatrics).
